Editorial Review: The Waterboys were formed in London in 1981 and led by the singer/songwriter Mike Scott, the group's only constant member - with the supporting musicians ever changing around him. 1988's Fisherman's Blues is the Waterboys's 4th album for which the band were joined by traditional Irish players like fiddler Steve Wickham, drummer Dave Ruffy, keyboardist Guy Chambers and bassist Marco Weissman, resulting in a stripped-down, folky sound which was a marked step away from the "big music" he founded and pursued in previous albums. It has been called their 'warmest and most rewarding record'. Complete with a bonus disc of previously unreleased tracks and packaged in a digipack with pvc slipcase - it follows on from the successful re-issues of the first 3 Waterboys's albums 'The Waterboys', 'A Pagan Place' and 'This Is The Sea'. EMI.

Rating: - Fisherman's Blues to Room to Roam
I can Highly Recommended Fisherman's Blues Collectors Edition, a must for its remastering and bonus CD
And Fisherman's Blues Pt2 I can strongly recommended or Too Close to Heaven for its place between This is the Sea and Fisherman's Blues. *****

Rating: - Celtic Masterpiece
This 4th album from 1988 by The Waterboys has now been enhanced. Fisherman's Blues represented a move to Celtic folk and includes Van Morrison's Sweet Thing and Dylan's Girl Of The North Country. The extra tracks all come from the same long recording session; the rest was released on the 2001 release Too Close to Heaven. My favorites include tuneful romps like And A Bang On The Ear, the title track, the spiritual songs Let Me Feel Holy Again and Meet Me At The Station, plus the breathtaking ... Read More
Rating: - My 2 cents
I just wanted to say that the remastered sound on this CD is great and the second disc fulfills what Closer To Heaven (ie - Fisherman's Blues II) failed to do. Overall, one of the best albums of the '80s, one of the best Irish (even if they are Scots) albums ever, one of the best folk/roots/rock albums ever. Just fantastic. So even if you already own the original album, this is worth picking up for the sound quality and extra disc of Fisherman's sessions.
Rating: - the second disc may be better than the first!
Fisherman's Blues is an excellent album in its own right. But the addition of the second disc makes this release indispensible.
Rating: - Spirited, soulful and terribly Irish!
This is an album for the century. If there ever was to be a definitive top 100 in music of all time, then this would find a deserving place among the top 10. Molded from Irish melodies and European rock of the 80's, this is a superb make from the little known Waterboys. And forget gem, this deluxe double album is a diamond. Surprising when you go back to listen to what else The Waterboys have to offer from their rough and rocky career in music. I first became acquainted with them a couple of years ... Read More
