Editorial Review: 'Allo, 'Allo! was a wildly popular British sitcom making unlikely humor of the German occupation of France, succeeding because of its sheer lunacy, and the amiable performance of veteran British character actor Gordon Kaye, as café owner René Artois. René finds himself surrounded by buffoonish German officers, who are easily duped yet still keep René on his toes, and sometimes in hot water. He also must juggle the imperious French Resistance leader, Michelle DuBois (played by Kirsten Cook; in a recurring gag, Michelle says, "Listen very carefully. I shall say this only once"--but never manages to get out the urgent message), his jealous wife (Carmen Silvera), and all his staff waitresses, who find the doughy René sexually irresistible. It is all très French, n'est-ce pas? Yet also very British in its broad slapstick tone; and American TV buffs will see more than a hint of Hogan's Heroes, M*A*S*H, and even the old spy series Get Smart. Season 5 features as many crazy sight gags as ever (including a special "spy camera" disguised inside a potato), very silly accents, lots of cross-dressing (did you know female German officers were "allowed" to grow mustaches of "tasteful length"?), and over-the-top plots to foil the Nazis. One particularly memorable episode in this series involves disguising explosives in 500 Christmas puddings that René is asked to house at his café. How, he pleads, is he to explain the presence of 500 Christmas puddings at his tiny bistro? Resistance leader Michelle, exasperated: "Just say you have cornered ze market!" --A.T. Hurley
For Rene the end of the war just cannot come soon enough. Relying on a camera hidden inside a potato a long distance duck and of course his unparalleled charm he aids the French Resistance in their outlandish plots to fool the Germans and end the war. But if Rene doesn't marry Denise the leader of the Communist Resistance it could mean the end of him! With his trusty piano player at his side Rene manages to escape a giant circular saw fake the death of the undertaker blast his way into the bank's vault and fit almost a million Francs down Lieutenant Gruber's trousers. Can Rene obtain the plans for the German invasion in time to save everyone? Or will the overbearing love of his female collaborators force him to save himself? Rating: - Great fun
I've watched series 1 to 5 now and absolutely love it. As the series progresses the characters seem to get into more complicated and hilarious situations. Its a great show to sit and watch at the end of a day because it takes very little concentration and your day was always better than poor Rene's.
I absolutely love it.
Rating: - Funny show!
My cousin got this for my grandparents and I was watching it and it's sooooo funny! It's one of the best English comedies I can think of. Get it!
Rating: - Laugh till Your Sides Hurt With Allo Allo
The Allo Allo crew have done it again with the release of Series 5. Quick and funny dialogue, hilarious scenarios, and side splitting situations, Allo Allo is a great remedy for Winter blues and weary workers.
Rene just seems to stumble from one absurd situation to the next but nevertheless always seems to get the better of the even more dim witted Gestapo, Generals and women around him. For a night of guaranteed laughs and laughter, spend an evening in Occupied France with Rene and all the ... Read More
Rating: - This series is really funny!
The 'Allo 'Allo series is very funny! Each season is better than the last, and season five is no exception! I can't wait for season six to come out! I highly recommend this if you enjoy British humor, but if you don't, then you won't appreciate the humor in this series.
Rating: - Good video and sound quality
Up until now, I bought the PAL encoded DVD's since they were the first available and I had a PAL to NTSC converter in my DVD player. The sound and video quality were pretty good. This region 1 DVD has better quality that my converted ones, and I continue to enjoy the adventures of Rene and friends!
