On his first eponymous effort, Ben Kweller sounds wise beyond his years--and younger than ever. Some songs come on mature and understated, like "Nothing Happening," others surge with youthful enthusiasm, like "I Gotta Move." Then again, Kweller is at that midway point between 20 and 30. His lyrics trod the same fine line between young and not-so-young. Rhyming "losing control" with "rock and roll" ("I Don't Know Why") seems pretty facile, but then he busts out with the infinitely more original, "I'm-a just a penny on the train track / Waitin' for my judgment day / Come on baby girl let me see those legs / 'For I get flattened away" ("Penny on the Train Tracks"). It takes dexterity to combine humor and longing without letting both sides down. Repetitive, if heartfelt ballad "Thirteen" messes with the momentum, but Ben Kweller is yet another winner from the man of the same name. His fourth full-length concludes with "This is War," in which the music-mad scientist splices the garage-rock rhythms of the White Stripes with the pop smarts of the Raconteurs... and the Monkees (specifically "I'm Not Your Stepping Stone"). Has Kweller been listening to Jack White lately? Or did he just discover Nuggets? Either way, here's hoping he keeps it up as the tambourine-fueled rocker is one of his best. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Rating: out of 5 stars - Ben Kweller (self titled) CD
This is a great cd throughout! Every song has a creative melody along with creative lyrics. I love the versatility from the guitar-driven "I gotta move" and the fast tempo "Penny on a train track" to the greatest piano ballad ever in "Thirteen". And many mid-tempo songs like "Run", "Nothing Happening", "I don't know why" and not to forget "Sundress". I loved the harmonica solo in "Thirteen", it added a musical depth to the simple piano/singer arrangement, and I look forward to hearing more harmoncia ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - He did it again
BK just won't quit making wonderful albums! His 3rd major album release still isn't akin to the energy and rock anthems of Sha Sha, but its okay people, its okay. Ben played every instrument on this album and it shows his true essence. There seems to be much more instrumental layering in this album. All songs are crisp and still have the charm that has made him so great. The songs are ambitious, nostalgic, and catchy. This album is somewhat more 'grown up' than his others, in that he loses some of his quirkyness, ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - I am in LOVE!
I fell instantly in love with Ben and his music when I saw him perform! He is ultra talented, that man can sing! I can't wait for more...bring it on!

Rating: out of 5 stars - Great album by Ben Kweller
Ben Kweller's self-titled album shows how much he has matured over the past few years. His music engages the listen with its catchy tunes, such as "Run" and "Penny on a Train Track." This album would not be a disappointment to anyone who likes his Sha Sha and On My Way albums. I've had this album for nearly a whole year, and haven't tired of it yet. Every track on the album are equally good, not like some other artists where just a few tracks are good.

Rating: out of 5 stars - Have It Your Way
When some hardcore Ben Kweller fans picked up his latest self titled, they were disappointed, comparing it too much to their beloved quirky Sha Sha or the catchy On My Way. But, it's been five whole years since Sha Sha...five years for Ben to get married, have a kid, grow up. Of course, when watching BK perform these songs live, you realize he hasn't grown up in the boring old Peter-Pan-no-imagination way. He's just able to pull off those unique ballads with a bit more grace this time. Not to mention, he plays every ... Read More
