Maude Maggart is one of my favorite female vocalists. Even made a road trip from western PA to New York to hear her in person. I recommend all her CD's.

If you like her previous albums, you will like this one. No surprises here in that regard, excellent song choices and appropriate, spare accompaniment. I have found that not everyone likes her voice and singing style. She has a trained voice, with a vibrato reminiscent of singers, especially female, from the very early, pre-electronic microphone era of the 20th century. Rating: - Breathtaking
"Old standards"? Not in these renditions. Listening to Maude is like hearing each of these songs sung for the first time. It's the most amazing thing: like she's learning the lyrics...no...feeling them...and sharing them straight from personal experience, whether painful or joyful.
Rating: - Transcendent Talent
I call Maude Maggart a transcendent talent because I'm someone who generally doesn't listen to these standards, as brilliant as the songs are. But Jonathan Schwartz has been playing cuts from this album on public radio, and Ms. Maggart's unique voice and evocative performance of these chestnuts brought tears to my eyes. Rating:  - Love the old standards but . . .
Sorry to rain on other reviewer's parade, but Maude just doesn't do it for me. Why? Well, she kinda sounds like Joan Baez. Nothing wrong with that. If she were singing "Diamonds and Rust" or "Simple Twist of Fate" I'd love it. But here, I'd prefer to hear someone like Diana Krall. I'll be saving my money on this one.
