Genre: HEAVY METAL
From Electric Light Orchestra to Urge Overkill, some of rock's most memorable acts have trafficked in over-amplifications of genre to a level approaching the absurd. Whether Dimmu Borgir has the campy self-awareness of the latter or simply find themselves locked into their delirious conflation of black metal, vaguely industrial rock, and symphonic and operatic sounds with the fetishistic devotion of Jeff Lynne from ELO is anyone's guess. The last few years have brought more young listeners back to metal, what with all the supposedly "intelligent" and emo metal groups such as Pelican, Mastodon, and Early Man. It's still quite a leap from that to a Norwegian band who prints their lyrics backwards so that they have to be read in the mirror and craft ridiculously dark concept albums about the evils of the Christian church, and how Satanism is so much better. There's no irony here. But there is bombast in just about every conceivable manifestation, delivered beautifully. From the soaring, operatic vocals and live string accompaniment to the beyond-fast riffing and drumming, In Sorte Diaboli is the perfect music to annoy parents and satisfy fans of overindulgence everywhere. --Mike McGonigal

Rating: out of 5 stars - Not Bad
I bought this album about a year ago, being a fan of their previous work, i figured it'd be a no brainer to check it out. Now i listened to this album quite a few times before i could really give it an honest opinion. To be honest I thought it was ok. There were some good tracks like Heretic Hammer and The Chosen Legacy. But for some reason it didn't really grasp me like their earlier albums. The drumming and keyboard work was stellar, but the guitar work wasn't anything eye, or ear catching. If ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - The trilogy concludes on a high note.
My first Dimmu disc and still one of my favorites.
As far as black metal is concerned, this band is THE best,PERIOD!
I used to think Cradle was the best, but no way. They pale in comparison to Dimmu.
Sad to see Nick Barker go. Hell Hammer is a master though.
Start to finish. Perfection.
A must have for metal fans.
The production, as with the other previous two. Amazing.
I wish Nile would work with this producer.
Ten stars easily.
I just hope, ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - Great album but.......the singer sounds like popeye with laryngitis
Great music, effects, probably their bestwork but it souns like popeye yelling after ncatching olive oil doing something obscene with brutus!!!

Rating: out of 5 stars - awesome album
Dimmu Borgir has managed to hit the nail on the head with this album. standout tracks on this album?: The Serpentine Offering is definitely a standout. in addition to YouTube, you can see the video on the Nuclear Blast website and on the DVD. you can see what went into the making of the video too. a plus for this album is that the keyboards do not drown out the guitar bits. one little complaint is that the lyrics were written backwards, so you would have to stand in front of a mirror to read them. ...
