Editorial Review:
When Spenser's closest ally, Hawk, is brutally injured and left for dead while protecting bookie Luther Gillespie, Spenser embarks on an epic journey to rehabilitate his friend in body and soul. Hawk, always proud, has never been dependent on anyone. Now he is forced to make connections: to accept the medical technology that will ensure his physical recovery, and to reinforce the tenuous emotional ties he has to those around him. Spenser quickly learns that the Ukrainian mob is responsible for the hit, but finding a way into their tightly knit circle is not nearly so simple. Their total control of the town of Marshport, from the bodegas to the police force to the mayor's office, isn't just a sign of rampant corruption-it's a form of arrogance that only serves to ignite Hawk's desire to get even. As the body count rises, Spenser is forced to employ some questionable techniques and even more questionable hired guns while redefining his friendship with Hawk in the name of vengeance.

Rating: out of 5 stars - Drivel
What a disappointment! The first few chapters of this book are essentially meaningless fill and drivel. I will avoid this author in the future. Why not just one word per page? Then you can sell more paper!

Rating: out of 5 stars - Gives Us a Deeper View into Hawk
Hawk getting shot in the back is certainly a way to change the series a bit and add new perspective to old characters. And because Hawk was shot, we get a view of his love interest and his moral perspective, which has been lacking in previous books.

I would never claim that an RBP novel will stretch your mind to any great extent, but they are great filler material for those days when you travel, are sick or spending the day on a beach. For those purposes, this is one of the better recent ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - A Good Effort
RBP has gotten a little lazy; his books follow a certain well-worn formula. However, Cold Service has this to offer: excellent Spenser-Hawk dialog, a minimum of Susan, and a plot that, though convoluted, at least offers some reader satisfaction. I doubt if the old Robert B. Parker will ever be back, but he's written far worse than this.

Rating: out of 5 stars - Not much action, plenty of being there when needed at whatever the cost
While serving as a bodyguard, Hawk is shot three times in the back and the man he was guarding killed. The story opens with Hawk recovering in a hospital room with Spenser at his side. Once his head is clear, Hawk vows revenge and Spenser, being the forever friend that he is, joins the action. At first, they don't realize what they are up against, but even when they do, that does not deter them. Hawk because he needs to recover his manhood and dignity, Spenser, because he must stand by Hawk.

Rating: out of 5 stars - couldn't finish this one. don't care what happens
Now I must admit that I'm not a big fan of the he-man black-white buddy-cop revenge and testosterone filled genre, but even so, this would not have even made the cut as a Law and Order episode. Clever dialogue??? "Beer tastes better with a head on it" what?? and all the recipies included? Gimme a break! It's like he was trying to make this book appealing to the ladies. Won't work, my friend. Anyway, I can guess what happens at the end ... Spenser somehow gets back at the "Grey man" for shooting him up, ... Read More
