Rating: - A Top Recommendation for *Das Lied*
I would like to offer something of a minority report on this recording of *Das Lied.* I have always regarded Reiner's interpretation as anything but austere and Maureen Forrester as anything other than a supremely eloquent soloist. Reiner's way with Mahler is unique, almost impressionistic in its sensuous allure and evocation of atmosphere. Rarely have I ever heard Mahler's "orientalisms" sound less trite and more poetic. He gets the balance of desolation and voluptuous ardor exactly right in ... Read More
Rating: - A first-time CD release ON THE LIVING STEREO SERIES, not on RCA
May I first correct what previous reviewers have understood from the front cover - this is the first time this recording appears on the Living Stereo series, but it had been available on CD from the late 1980s on the RCA Fritz Reiner Edition (and had never been deleted!). It was probably the only one Reiner recording in this case - for instance when making it to CD, his Mahler 4th was immediately released on Living Stereo without going through the Reiner Edition first. And all of the Reiner Edition ... Read More
Rating: - Great orchestra & conductor in their prime
I just finished listening to this for the first time. It's hard to believe this has never been issued on cd. The engineering, as revealed on the three-channel SACD track, is simply phenomenal. The Chicago Symphony is spread out ideally in a wide, deep soundstage and both the tutti and solo passages (of which there are many here -- Mahler was a genius at chamber-like scoring) are captured to stunning effect. And this was recorded in 1959!
The vocal soloists may not be the greatest in the ... Read More
Rating: - A Living Stereo marvel
If the CD jacket is to be believed, this is the first appearance of this perfomance on CD. If so, it was worth the wait. The sound is dated, but as one becomes immersed in the performance this all fades away. This is a typically excellent Living Stereo recording. The orchestra is close and all the details of this phenomenal orchestration immerges. I could really hear the mandolin in the final pages. I had heard Richrd Lewis live at the Met and in our local auditorium and he had a huge voice. He ... Read More
Rating: - A Gripping Performance, But...
I gave this new SACD version a five-star rating, but would really like to give it something like four-and-a-half. The only reason is no text is included. Louis Biancolli's notes, apparently from the original issue are here, but it would have been wonderful to have had the poems Mahler used as the basis for this extraordinary music. If that would have ended up making the CD booklet too thick, why didn't RCA/BMG set up a Website to download the text, like they did with their SACD opera reiusses? This ... Read More
