So "come along and ride this train" - the train that Cash envisioned for us all - every week on The Johnny Cash TV Show and now for generations to come.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: MUSIC DVD/CONCERTS UPC: 886970402699
Country and rock 'n' roll legend Johnny Cash hosted his own variety television series from the summer of 1969 to spring 1971, and by all accounts the weekly program was destination TV. The Johnny Cash Show: The Best of Johnny Cash 1969-1971 is an 83-minute summary of everything Cash tried to do in his hourlong format, from presenting an eclectic and even-handed overview of popular music to promoting a humanitarian perspective on issues that mattered most to him: drug use, poverty, reliance on faith, compassion for criminals. This DVD documentary is largely comprised of musical performances by Cash and some of the many guests who appeared on his show. But there are also snippets of interviews with behind-the-camera talent involved with the program as well as such old friends as Kris Kristofferson and Hank Williams Jr. Everyone speaks highly of Cash's warm, on-camera persona, and selected footage proves them right: Cash is ever the gentleman with an expansive spirit and down-to-earth grit. Musical highlights include Cash's own "I Walk the Line" and "Man In Black," Bob Dylan's straightforward "I Threw It All Away," Loretta Lynn's "I Know How," and a delightful George Jones medley. Ray Charles takes a bluesy spin on "Ring of Fire," Cash's fellow Sun Records artists Carl Perkins and Roy Orbison take turns in the spotlight, Neil Young brings the crowd to its feet with an amazing "The Needle and the Damage Done," and Eric Clapton (fronting Derek and the Dominos) turns in a passionate "It's Too Late." --Tom Keogh

Rating: - Here's Johnny
The only way this DVD could be better is if it had more discs so make sure you buy the 2 DVD version.
If you are a fan of any of the performers here you cannot go wrong.
Rating: - Great for Johnny Cash fans
My wife and I really love the video collection, we even ordered a second DVD for her sister and her husband. They love it too. Great for Johnny Cash and music fans in general.
Rating: - Johnny Cash Show
A very well put together digest of two years of shows. The thread linking the appearances ie the man himself Johnny Cash and the anecdotes from his life complement the music and the type of guest. An excellent piece of entertainment.
Rating: - essential American (and sometimes Canadian) music
This is a stunning collection. Eighty five-star reviews out of about ninety reviews... that says it all. So does the list of artists and songs. I bought the sampler DVD at Positively Records outside Philly and decided to trade up to the 2-DVD version within hours of my purchase.
I really hope that a Volume Two is in the works. As a long-time Everly Brothers fan, I also hope that a DVD compilation of The Everly Brothers Show (Johnny's summer replacement series) is forthcoming. ... Read More
Rating: - This is Johnny at his rawest and most essential
Not sure what I can add to the above reviews but I have become a huge fan of Jonny since the Walk the Line movie, bought most of his top selling Cds such as San Quentin and Folsom Prison. This DVD is the first time I have seen jonny perform live. What can one say about John Carter Cash that has not been written before. If you like the man and his music then you will like or LOVE this DVD. Not only is it a compilation of 60 hours worth of TV wrapped into a couple of hours of June, Statler Brothers, ... Read More
