Customer Reviews
Rating: - It's just amazing for the price
I'm not sure why this isn't a more expensive product other than the Initial brand name. It has the best quality screen of any portable DVD player I have ever seen. I've had mine for almost a year now and I love it.
- It plays almost every DivX and XviD file I have ever tried in it...no, in fact I can't think of a file it didn't play.
- It reads every brand and format of home-burned DVD I have thrown at it.
- If you google a region code hack, it'll even play all my British comedy DVDs.
- Battery life is amazing. I have actually gotten through 10 half-hour episodes of a TV show (in DivX) before needed to recharge. It used a bit more power for actual DVDs, but well over 2.5 hours is long enough for almost any movie. It's hard to find spare batteries for this player, but you can always use the Initial RB270. It's a universal rechargable battery for portable players, and it would probably double your battery time for those long flights or train rides.
So why didn't I rate it 5 stars? Because it has no A/V input. If it had input it would be the perfect little player. Small, light, great screen, pretty good sound from the headphone jacks, great battery life...it's just missing that one thing that would make it perfect.
Still, if you have no need for an A/V input, then this might be your perfect player, especially at this price point.
Rating: - Awesome DVD Player
Before I purchased this portable DVD player, I read about a dozen or so reviews from all kinds of models I was considering. NO MATTER WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO BUY, there's always bound to be someone who doesn't like it. So even though some reviewers didn't like this portable DVD player, I bought it anyway. And I have not regretted it.
The battery life is outstanding. Hooking it up to our "regular" TV is a snap. Playing DiVX on it works well, too. It comes with a car adapter/charger, too, and is just a blast to have with me all the time. If I don't feel like using the remote, I can also do everything manually with the dashboard controls.
As a matter of fact, I am thinking about buying a second one. I play in a band, and from time to time, I need a cheat sheet for some of the songs -- or for portions of some of the songs. So I've been building my own tele-prompter DVDs (big fat white font on black background), and instead of hauling around a book or anything clumsy, I'll just use the Initial IDM-750DX 7" portable DVD player on stage. What a blast!
Rating: - very noisy, or defective unit
I had to return it immediately. It was making so much noise, it was actually disturbing, and I sounded like it might break at any time.
Rating: - So cool, even for DivX
This is an excelent product, even for DivX files, also you can play them with srt subtitle files.
Rating: - No DL (Dual Layer) support!
This is my 3rd Initial portable player. The very first one, a 4", did not hold up all that well: after just a year's infrequent use (vacations) it would go for long periods of time without being able to recognize DVDs. I gave it away to my graduate student who seems to have a bit better luck with it than I did. My second one, a 7", held up much better over years. My biggest gripe with it was the bad design of a battery attachment mechanism: 1 of the little plastic tabs tabs broke off and the rest bent out of shape to various degrees. It also has a cumbersome, two-piece power supply. The IDM-750DX seems to be much better designed, including the light, one-piece power supply. The main reason I bought it, however, was for the ability to play DIVX disks as I intended to dump 8-10 of them on each DVD to reduce carry-on. I was greatly disappointed when I discovered that my DL discs, that played perfectly on my Philips player, would not mount on IDM-750DX. A quick trip to videohelp.com confirmed that it indeed does not support DL, which increases the number of disks two-fold. I was disappointed, but, then again, for the price, it is a bargain portable DIVX player. If it holds up with time, I will get over my DL blues.
